Bonus outrage could put AIG in bankruptcy

Public outrage over the large bonuses AIG handed out to its employees could limit future federal aid to the troubled insurer.

And some critics argue it may finally create the political will to place AIG where it should have been all along — in bankruptcy court.

AIG's use of taxpayer funds to richly reward employees who made the company insolvent in the first place has irked observers on both sides of the political spectrum.

"Your company was bankrupt when you came with a begging bowl in hand to the U.S. taxpayer. How do you then justify this bonus?" demanded Sanjai Bhagat, professor of finance at the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business in Boulder.
